Habitat
Habitat Where Are All The Bears? How Secure Are Our Bears? Ecological Relationships You & Your Environment
So What's A Habitat?
- A habitat is the place where an animal (or plants) live
- A bear's
habitat provides for its basic needs of:
- Space (bears need plenty of space!)
- Food
- Shelter
- Water
- Bears need a reliable and plentiful source of food throughout the late spring, summer, and early fall:
- If bears don't have a big enough food supply
they could starve unless they can find food
elsewhere... Habitats for Bears
- Black Bears prefer
coniferous
forests for their habitat, near a good supply of water with some open areas
like fields and
meadows which provide grasses, herbs, berries, and other desirable foods
- Grizzlies prefer river valleys, and open meadows for their habitat.
They live on the coast and throughout the mountainous regions of BC
- The environment where bears live provide them with water from rivers, ponds, lakes or streams:
- They also get the materials they need for their daybeds like trees, bushes, and branches
- And, use thickets, hollow logs, depressions left by uprooted trees, rocky outcroppings, and even open areas as their den sites
- Bears adapt to winter food shortages by entering a period of winter sleepiness (lethargy, dormancy or hibernation):
