  •  Adult Weight

    •  According to the Grizzly Bears In BC web-site
      • The Grizzly's body shape and long fur make then look heavier than they actually are

      • Exceptionally large bears have been recorded over 500 kg (1,100 lb.)
... with the largest at 680 kg

      • In BC, spring weights of adult male grizzly bears average around 220 kg (480 lb.)
        ... between 250 kg to 350 kg

      • Average fall weights are about 30% to 40% greater

      •  And females are about half the weight of males

    •  Grizzly Bear weight varies according to whether:

      •  They are male or female (males are bigger)

      •  Their age (they are the heaviest around 8 - 12 years of age)

      •  The season (they are usually heavier in autumn than in spring)

      •  The food supply (the more available and abundant, the bigger grizzlies grow)

      •  The geographic area in which they live (they are heavier in coastal than in interior regions)

    •  Grizzly Bear Males are 1.2 to 2.2 times as heavy as females

      • The heavier a male is the better chance he has of successfully breeding with a female

      • The heavier a female is the better are her chances of having cubs
