  • The Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) is the second largest member of the bear family (Ursidae), next only to the polar bear.

    •  Most of the world's Grizzly Bears live in western North America and in Russia

    •  Did you know that Canada is home to half the Grizzlies in North America and that nearly half of Canada's Grizzly Bear population
       lives in British Columbia? 

Where Are All The Grizzly Bears?

  •  Grizzly Bears live all over BC

    • They inhabit most of the province except Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Lower Mainland, and portions of the south-central interior

Grizzly Bears Are Also Called:

  •  Brown Bears 

  •  North American Grizzly 

  •  Ursus arctos (classification) 

    • A female bear is called a 'sow'  

    • A male bear is called a 'boar'  

    • A group of bears is called 'sloth of bears'  

 The Grizzly Bear is a North American sub-species of the Brown Bear

  • Ursus arctos  is the  widest ranging bear species in the world, which is found in Asia and Europe too 

  1. Grizzly Bear common sub-species (Ursus arctos horribilis)

  2. Kodiak (Ursus arctos middendorffi) a larger sub-species found are found only on Kodiak, Afognak, and Shuyak Islands in Alaska

Note: The European Brown Bear is the same species as the North American Grizzly
